DHL Express vs. UPS — Two Premium Express Carriers Compared
UPS and DHL Express are the two largest premium express carriers. Comparison of speed, network coverage, pricing, customs handling, and when each makes sense.
Quick verdict
DHL Express
Better for Asia-bound shipments (China, Japan, Korea), express documents, and e-commerce with detailed customs assistance. Time Definite International is the benchmark.
UPS
Better for B2B shipments to the USA and companies with UPS volume contracts. Stronger B2B logistics position, UPS Access Points, and Trade Direct for importers.
Who are UPS and DHL Express?
UPS (United Parcel Service) is an American company, the world's largest carrier by shipment volume. DHL Express is the express division of the German DHL Group — the same DHL that operates DHL Parcel domestically, but DHL Express is a distinct premium service with different pricing and infrastructure.
Both have their own aircraft fleets and guarantee delivery by a defined time (Time Definite). This is the key difference from regional carriers like DPD or GLS, where delivery windows are estimates, not guarantees.
Pricing — indicative comparison
Retail rates vary by route, weight, and whether you have a volume account. Typical ranges (without a corporate contract):
| Shipment / destination | DHL Express | UPS Express |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 kg within EU | approx. €25–35 | approx. €22–32 |
| 1 kg to USA | approx. €55–75 | approx. €50–70 |
| 5 kg to China | approx. €80–120 | approx. €85–130 |
| 10 kg to UK | approx. €60–90 | approx. €55–85 |
Prices drop dramatically with a corporate account (from roughly 200 shipments per year). Eurosender, Sendcloud, or DHL's own MyBusiness programme offer access to lower rates without a direct contract.
Transit times
Within the EU (Germany, France, Italy, Spain), both carriers offer 1–2 business day delivery. DHL Express Worldwide EU typically delivers by end of the next business day for shipments dispatched before 18:00.
For Asia-bound shipments (China, Japan, Singapore), DHL Express is historically 4–8 hours faster than UPS — a result of its stronger hubs in Hong Kong and Frankfurt. The practical difference is often 1 day.
Customs clearance
Both services include full customs assistance (DHL Customs Services and UPS Trade Direct). For non-EU destinations (USA, UK, Japan, Australia), both process customs declarations automatically.
DHL Express has a slightly stronger position for shipments to China — the local DHL network and DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) service are well-established. UPS offers DDP also, but implementation in China is less consistent.
B2B vs. B2C shipments
UPS is traditionally stronger for B2B delivery (business addresses, pallet freight, import logistics). DHL Express dominates in B2C e-commerce shipments — more collection/delivery points (DHL ServicePoints) and better consumer communication at the doorstep.
When express carriers are and are not worth it
- Worth it: time-critical documents (legal, warranty replacement), shipments to destinations without affordable alternatives, sensitive goods requiring granular tracking at every step
- Not worth it: standard e-commerce shipments within the EU (5× more expensive than DPD/GLS), shipments where DPD or GLS deliver in the same timeframe at 20–30% of the cost
Cheaper alternatives for EU shipments
For EU-internal shipments, you can save 60–80% compared to DHL Express or UPS direct rates by using DPD, GLS or Eurosender. Eurosender compares multiple carriers for your specific route in one step — the result is almost always dramatically cheaper for EU destinations with comparable transit times.
