Complete comparison of six international carriers for shipments from Europe. Direct carriers vs. brokers vs. platforms — who is cheapest, fastest, and best for customs? Includes pricing matrix, transit times, and situation guide.
Quick verdict by use case
Cheapest EU parcel
Eurosender
Broker that buys DHL/DPD/GLS volume and passes the discount to you. Best price for individual EU shipments without a subscription.
Eurosender profile →Global express
DHL Express
Best non-EU coverage from Europe. 220+ countries, own aircraft, full customs — and usually the fastest to Asia and Africa.
DHL Express profile →E-commerce platform
Sendcloud
Multi-carrier platform for online shops. Connects DHL, DPD, GLS, UPS and 40+ others with Shopify, WooCommerce and custom checkouts.
Sendcloud profile →Six players dominate international parcel shipping from Europe. They serve the same core need — getting a parcel from A to B — but operate completely differently. DHL Express, UPS, and FedEx own their aircraft and deliver globally in 24–72 hours. GLS is cheaper but EU-only. Eurosender buys carrier capacity in bulk and resells at a discount. Sendcloud is a software layer connecting your e-shop to all of the above at once.
This guide maps all six on price, speed, coverage, and fit. One table replaces six browser tabs.
1. Overview — carrier types and scope
The biggest structural difference is carrier type, not brand. Direct carriers (DHL, UPS, FedEx, GLS) own infrastructure. Brokers and platforms (Eurosender, Sendcloud) are intermediaries — they access the same network but under negotiated volume rates.
| Carrier | Type | Coverage | Min. commitment | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DHL Express | Direct carrier | 220+ countries | None (retail) | EU → Asia/Africa express |
| UPS | Direct carrier | 220+ countries | None (retail) | Oversized parcels, USA |
| FedEx | Direct carrier | 220+ countries | None (retail) | EU → USA/Latin America |
| GLS | Direct carrier | EU + Norway/Switzerland | None (retail) | Affordable EU parcel |
| Eurosender | Broker | EU + some non-EU Europe | None (per shipment) | Cheapest EU, no subscription |
| Sendcloud | Platform | EU (via 40+ carriers) | Monthly plan (€25+/mo) | E-commerce automation |
Note: Sendcloud is a B2B-only product. It is not designed for individual one-off senders — you need a shop or business account and pay a monthly subscription on top of per-shipment rates.
2. Pricing matrix — 5 kg parcel from Western Europe
All prices are approximate 2026 retail estimates for a standard 5 kg parcel, home pickup. Volume accounts and negotiated rates can reduce these significantly (30–60%).
| Carrier | EU domestic (e.g. DE→PL) | EU to UK | EU to USA | EU to Japan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DHL Express | €28–38 | €35–48 | €65–85 | €90–115 |
| UPS | €25–40 | €32–50 | €60–80 | €95–120 |
| FedEx | €28–42 | €34–50 | €60–78 | €100–125 |
| GLS | €12–20 | €18–28 | Not available | Not available |
| Eurosender | €10–22 | €16–26 | Not available | Not available |
| Sendcloud | €10–18 + plan | €15–25 + plan | Not available | Not available |
For EU routes, the difference between a direct carrier and a broker is roughly 2–3×. For non-EU destinations, only DHL, UPS, and FedEx are available — and pricing is within 15% of each other.
3. Transit times
| Carrier | EU internal | EU → UK | EU → USA | EU → Asia |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DHL Express | 24–48 h | 24–48 h | 48–72 h | 48–72 h |
| UPS Express | 24–48 h | 24–48 h | 48–72 h | 72–96 h |
| FedEx | 24–48 h | 24–48 h | 48–72 h | 72–96 h |
| GLS Standard | 1–3 days | 2–4 days | Not available | Not available |
| Eurosender | 1–3 days | 2–4 days | Not available | Not available |
| Sendcloud | 1–3 days | 2–4 days | Not available | Not available |
If speed matters more than price, all three direct global carriers are equivalent for most routes. DHL wins for Asia; FedEx wins for USA west coast and Latin America; UPS wins for oversized freight.
4. Insurance and liability
Default liability (included in the base price) is low across the board — typically €100 or less per shipment. Declared-value insurance is available from all direct carriers and from Eurosender for an additional fee.
| Carrier | Default liability | Max declared-value insurance |
|---|---|---|
| DHL Express | ~€100 | ~€50,000 |
| UPS | ~€100 | ~€70,000 |
| FedEx | ~€100 | ~€100,000 |
| GLS | ~€750 | ~€1,500 (standard max) |
| Eurosender | Depends on carrier | Up to ~€5,000 with add-on |
| Sendcloud | Depends on carrier | Depends on carrier + plan |
For shipments over €1,000 in declared value, use a direct carrier with explicit declared-value insurance. GLS and most broker/platform options are not suitable for high-value goods.
5. Customs handling
EU-internal shipments (e.g. Germany to Poland) do not require customs — all three types handle them equally. Customs handling becomes a differentiator only for non-EU destinations (UK post-Brexit, USA, Asia, Africa).
- DHL Express — full customs clearance included. DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) available on most routes. Outstanding for China, India, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
- UPS — full customs clearance, UPS Trade Direct for B2B shipments. Strongest customs teams for North America and healthcare/pharma shipments.
- FedEx — full customs clearance. Strongest for Brazil and Mexico (notoriously complex import regulations). FedEx International Priority ships door-to-door DDP.
- GLS — EU only, no customs beyond UK. For UK post-Brexit, GLS charges additional customs fees and lead time increases to 3–5 days.
- Eurosender — EU routes only. Customs beyond the EU is not supported.
- Sendcloud — no built-in customs; routes you to the carrier's customs tools. Non-EU shipping requires direct carrier configuration within your Sendcloud account.
6. Situation matrix — which carrier to pick
| Your situation | Best pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One-off parcel within EU, price matters | Eurosender | No subscription, brokers best EU rate from DHL/DPD/GLS volume pool |
| EU parcel, pick up in-store option needed | GLS | 1,200+ ParcelShop drop-off points across EU |
| Shipping to Asia (Japan, South Korea, China) | DHL Express | Fastest transit, strongest customs team for Asia |
| Shipping to USA (east coast) | DHL Express or UPS | Comparable, book via Eurosender for lower rate |
| Shipping to USA (west coast, Latin America) | FedEx | Memphis hub, stronger west coast and LatAm network |
| E-shop sending 50+ parcels/month | Sendcloud | Multi-carrier automation, label printing, tracking in one platform |
| Oversized parcel (over 120 cm / 40 kg) | UPS | Largest size allowance of any carrier: 270 × 165 × 165 cm |
| High-value goods (over €10,000) | FedEx or UPS | Highest declared-value insurance ceilings (~€100,000) |
| Shipping to Africa or Middle East | DHL Express | Strongest regional network, Lagos and Bahrain hubs |
Conclusion
The carrier decision tree is shorter than it looks:
- Destination outside EU? → You need DHL Express, UPS, or FedEx. Use DHL for Asia/Africa, FedEx for Americas, UPS for oversized cargo. Book via Eurosender to access their volume rates.
- Within EU, occasional sender? → Eurosender or GLS. No subscription required, 2–3× cheaper than direct carrier retail.
- E-commerce, 50+ shipments/month? → Sendcloud connects all the carriers above under one subscription with e-shop integrations.
For most individual senders in Europe, starting with Eurosender covers 90% of use cases — it compares DHL, DPD, GLS and others live and picks the cheapest for your specific route and weight. For the remaining 10% (express non-EU, very high value, oversize), book directly with the global carrier that fits.
